Kate Melvina Newton Wiley was the wife of a wealthy manufacturer in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She is dressed in the latest fashion, complete with a feather-trimmed hat and kidskin gloves. At age twenty, Miss Newton created a spectacular silk and velvet quilt which is now on display at Memorial Hall Museum, Deerfield, Massachusetts. After her marriage to Solon L. Wiley, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska. This is a tintype, which is literally a photograph produced on metal.
