During the 18th century candlesticks were essential household items. Most households burned candles at night to provide light for reading, doing handwork, or just getting around the house and yard. These elaborate candlesticks are made of brass and have a very practical design. The knob on the side is set within a long slot. As the candle burned, the knob was moved up to reveal more wax. The flange at the top of the candlesticks caught the wax as it dripped. This excess wax could then be re-melted and formed into new candles. These brass candlesticks were used by Reverend Roger Newton, who was Pastor of the First Church of Greenfield from 1765 to 1816.
