In this letter, John Emory Fuller tells his fiancée of the death of his commanding officer, Brigadeer General Frederick Lander, who died of pneumonia at Paw Paw, Virginia in March, 1862. Fuller was sick and still in the hospital when he wrote this letter. Although his doctor did, in fact, issue him a furlough paper, he did not after all go to the sanatorium in Wellsville, Ohio.
