An American force of 7,000 men was sent to Vladivostok, Russia in 1918, to join an international army that fought in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). It stayed until 1920. Unlike American forces in western Russia, it did not see much action. This picture was probably staged, as suggested by the grins of two of the participants. Note the two raised hands from inside the hut. Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield, who took this picture, volunteered for the Army in August, 1917 and served until discharge in May, 1919.
