World War I was usually fought by heavily dug in troops who topped their trenches with huge amounts of barbed wire. The Russian Civil War (1917-22) began before the end of the World War. In it, the Bolshevik (later Soviet) regime struggled to gain control over the entirety of Russia. In the east, an international force, American included, tried to stop the Bolsheviks from seizing Siberia. Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield was a part of it. These encased rolls of barbed wire await unspooling. In the meantime, they offer a handy observation platform.
