The Green Furniture & Undertaking Company existed from 1906 to 1918. It grew from the Green & Vosburg Furniture & Undertaking Company, which dissolved in 1903 with the retirement of Stephen Vosburg. Alexander W. Green ran the company until 1907 when he died at the age of 29. The company was one of four furniture and undertaking firms in Greenfield. Furniture making and casket making required the same skills: the careful cutting and assembly of wood. Companies like this were extremely common in the 19th and early 20th century. The industry shifted in the 1930s and 1940s when furniture began being mass produced in factories and when embalming or cremation became mandatory in all cemeteries.
