A good harvest required a long, cold winter. The ice on this pond formed for weeks before its harvest. The ice blocks here are nearly a foot deep and are being lifted from the pond using ice tongs. The ice had previously been cut using an ice plow. Ice-saws were then used to cut through the remaining ice, forming the square blocks. Then long bars, or packing-chisels, were used to separate the blocks. After the first blocks were lifted from the water, the remaining blocks were floated in the water of the channel. These newly harvested ice blocks will be loaded onto the horse-drawn sleigh in the background.
