Antonin Wysocki was born in what was Russian Poland in 1878. He emigrated to the United States in 1889. In 1897 he married Jenni Moshetski, also a recent emigrant (1893) from Russian Poland, who had come to the United States with her father, Alexander. They had a son, Alexander, in 1899. Wysocki was listed on the 1900 census as a farm laborer, but by 1910 he had built a business in what became one of the main industries in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, onion cultivation. This warehouse was near his house on South Sugarloaf Street. Like many Polish immigrants of the time, he quickly established himself in the community, supporting not only his family but also his father-in-law. <BR> <BR>This photograph comes from the Howes Brothers collection of photographs. The Howes Brothers, based in Ashfield, Massachusetts, made more than 20,000 images of New England rural life from 1890 to around 1910, offering a glimpse into the lives of people rarely visible in history.
