This warrant states that Benoni Grover, a private soldier in the militia, of Montague has been charged 10 shillings for failure to appear and to show just cause. Grover had been ordered to appear "with his Arms and Equipment as the Law of this Commonwealth directs" on June 23, 1789. He did not show up and was fined 10 shillings. The fine was compounded by charges of 19 shillings 4 pence for a total of 29 shillings and 4 pence. He is to be sent to the jail in Springfield or Northampton until he pays. By the time all costs are assessed, the 10 shilling charge has escalated to 3 pounds 4 pence.
