Cartridge boxes were among the supplies the Union Army issued to a Civil War soldier. The typical soldier received a uniform, a knapsack stuffed with extra clothing, toilet articles, sewing kit, personal items. To sleep, he was given two woolen blankets and an oil cloth to be used as ground cover. A bayonet scabbard would have hung from the soldier's waist. This cartridge box would have held a percussion cap pouch and extra ammunition. Its original leather strap has been replaced by a woven cloth.
