This political cartoon shows a family canoeing their "Good Ship Vacation" through the rocky rapids of vacation costs. After the crash of the Stock Market in October, 1929, the United States went into a period of severe economic decline. By the 1930s, people who could afford a vacation in the summer of 1929 could no longer do so. By 1933 about one-third of U.S banks had failed, leaving people without their savings or any financial safety net.
