Tourism became an important part of the economy of western Massachusetts during the beginning of the 20th century. "Mountain" houses were built on the summits of many of the mountains in western Massachusetts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The views as well as the promise of a good meal attracted customers touring the countryside with the advent of widespread use of the automobile in the first half of the 20th century. This mountain house afforded the patrons views from all sides, according to the writing on the postcard.
