Four women sit in their carriage before the house of Colonel Henry M. Philips of Springfield, Massachusetts. They wear their best clothes as they pose for this formal portrait. Colonel Philips was a manufacturer in Springfield and his house is in the best neighborhood -- it has street lighting. The culture of the late 19th century was one of display. Behind the women, the porch has two substantial rocking chairs from which Mayor Philips and his wife would have greeted their neighbors as they walked past.
