Taking center stage in the c.1909 photograph by an unidentified photographer, is the gramophone, or phonograph, with a large speaker horn. Three generations of the Hitchcock family of Amherst, Massachusetts, were able, with Thomas Edison's 1877 invention, to enjoy music in their private garden.
