Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were described as being among the finest pictorial photographers in America at the turn of the 20th century. The sisters particularly liked to capture rural scenes that evoked life in the earlier years in New England. This photograph depicts farm work in the days when the horse was truly the "work horse." The posed photograph shows the figures illuminated against the sky.
