This Allen sisters photograph was taken in haying season, summer, about 1909 in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The three children in the Allen photograph have been identified, so the picture is easy to date. The youngest of the Andrews girls was born in 1905. Many farm families continued to rely on horses and oxen at this time, even though tractors were used by increasing numbers. The three look on as the horse nibbles some of the uncut hay, the wagon behind him loaded and ready to be pulled to the storage barn. One man handles the reins as the other loads the bundled hay onto the wagon.
