Acting out their notions of Native American culture, these Deerfield, Massachusetts, men imitate "Indians" praying in Deerfield's 1913 historical pageant. Like many historical pageants of the time, Deerfield's depicted Native Americans in association with nature, soon to be conquered by the "civilizing" English. In pretending to be engaged in a Native American religious activity, they belittle the customs of Native people.
