By the early 19th century, every town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, produced yards and yards of wool fabric. A portion was made in textile mills whose looms were powered using rivers and streams; the rest was made at home, as part of a cottage industry. Wool continued to be an important part of the economy until the late 19th century, when crops like tobacco supplanted it.
