Built in 1890 by Edward H.R. Lyman at a cost of over $100,000, plus another $25,000 for the interior, the Academy of Music in Northampton, Massachusetts, was one of the top rated small theaters in New England. Tickets were $1.00, or $1.50 for big name acts such as Sarah Bernhardt, Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Mae West, Harry Houdini, Boris Karloff, William Powell, Basil Rathbone, John Philip Sousa, Jeanette MacDonald, and Ruth Gordon. In 1898 the Academy began to show moving pictures. Lyman gave the Academy to the City of Northampton in 1892.
