Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, were artistic photographers who used their camera to create pictures they felt typified traditional, rural New England life. Early settlers had long before learned from Native Americans how to collect maple tree sap and boil it down into sugar or syrup in early spring, when cold nights and warm days make the sap run. The Allen sisters thus captured a quintessentially New England activity when they posed these children busily gathering sap.
