This long flintlock gun was carefully and artistically made in southern New England sometime between 1765 and 1780. It is typical of the sort of hunting weapon created in Rhode Island, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and western Connecticut. A number of militia were carrying them when General Washington took command of the American army surrounding British-occupied Boston in 1775. This example is marked "PALAN" on the lockplate.
