Expansive fields of tobacco, corn and squash can still be seen in the towns surrounding Sugarloaf Mountain in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. The fertile river-bed fields of the Connecticut River Valley provide bountiful crops for the patient and skilled farmer. One of the most profitable crops was and still is tobacco. In tobacco farming, seeds are not sown directly into the prepared fields. They are sown in special beds and carefully tended until they are ready to transplant.
