Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) was a major general in the militia of Massachusetts, a surveyor, a published author, postmaster, register of deeds, and generally a man of affairs in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He held the office of High Sheriff between 1814 and 1831, during which time he served as a member of the 1820 constitutional convention. In addition to his works on military science, he made a special study of the French and Indian wars, published in 1824 as Antiquarian Researches. This manuscript describes the involvement of local troops who opposed Gen. John Burgoyne's invasion from Canada during the American Revolution.
