James Wells Champney was a prolific genre artist who studied in Boston, Paris, Antwerp and Rome before settling in Deerfield for a while. He taught art at Smith College from 1877 to 1884. <BR> <BR>James Wells Champney illustrated all of his wife Elizabeth Champney's literary works. She first published in 1873, just six months after they were married.
