Published monthly in Boston, this October 1902 issue of Handicraft magazine concentrates on the village industries that were flourishing in Deerfield, Massachusetts, at the height of the arts and crafts movement. The first was the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework, established in 1896, and followed by basket-making, rug-making, netting, and enameling, to name only a few. The crafts brought fame to Deerfield because of the fine workmanship, but also brought a much-needed lift in the economy of a small town where the primary industry, farming, had slowed.
