The long handle on the frying pan allowed the cook to position him or herself a distance from the hot fire, whether the fire was in a kitchen fireplace or outside at a campfire. Both the pan and the handle were wrought, rather than cast, by a blacksmith. The end of the handle has been shaped in a ring for hanging. Owned by Major John Bolton of Colrain, Massachusetts, the pan was used by Bolton when he served in the Revolutionary army.
