Paul Revere (1735-1818), patriot, silversmith, and engraver, was born long after King Philip's death in 1676. The likeness, therefore, may bear no resemblance to the Wampanoag chief, and the subtext beneath the picture states, "Fanciful portrait of King Philip by Paul Revere." Philip is best known to the English as the fermenter and leader of what became known as King Philip's War, which began in New England in 1675 and extended beyond the time, in 1676, when Philip was killed. Metacom (King Philip) was known to have been in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts and his men burned every major town in that area.
