This tall chest with bonnet top and dovetailed construction is decorated modestly with carved fans on the center drawers of both the upper and lower case and with quarter columns on the upper case. Chests of many drawers became popular in the closet-less houses of the 18th century as people became more prosperous and acquired more possessions. Dr. Elihu Ashley (1750-1817), the owner of the chest, was the son of Deerfield's second minister and married in 1775.
