Painted in his later years, this oil portrait of Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) shows him seated in a chair wearing a black coat, waistcoat, and a white stock in the fashion of the 1830s. The books visible in the painting illustrate Maj. Hoyt's interest in historical and scientific subjects. He published works on military science, astronomy, and geography and left copious notes on a special interest of his, the French and Indian wars.
