George Spencer Fuller (1863-1911) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, chose to make farming his primary occupation, unlike his famous father, George Fuller (1822-1884). As a working farmer, he had little time during the growing season to exercise his talent as a painter, but in the winter he took the time to capture the muted winter colors surrounding him, and most of his paintings come from this season. The low rolling hills depicted here are typical of those found on Fuller's farm, located near the banks of the Deerfield River.
