Writing Cinquain Poetry
Lesson 7

Cinquain poetry is similar to haiku poetry. It often has a nature theme and describes one thing. The cinquain is composed of 5 lines, each with a specified number of syllables:

Line # # of Syllables
1 2
2 4
3 6
4 8
5 2

Adelaide Crapsey, who invented this poetry form, wrote the following cinquain:

November Night

Listen...
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing ghosts,
The leaves, frost-crisped, break from the trees
And fall.
