An alternative to a plain wooden panel or a painting hung on the chimney breast was a scene painted directly on the panel. This picture of Boston Harbor was probably done by itinerant painter Jared Jessup who was known to have been in the Bernardston vicinity around 1813. The sawn hole was one later owner's solution to accommodate a stovepipe.
