This photograph, taken in Greenfield, Massachusetts, of two female workers for the Red Cross, illustrates the role some American women assumed during World War I. Volunteers and employees of the Red Cross supplied sewn and knitted clothing, rolled bandages for the wounded, and raised funds for medical supplies with mobile "WAR FUND" carts like the one shown in the photograph.
