Some family registers were also mourning pieces, remembering the death of a member of the family. This example, embroidered by 16-year-old Nancy Hoyt, was probably done when she was a student at Deerfield Academy during the summer of 1804 after the death of her father David, at age 46, in the year before. Schoolgirl embroideries were most often done in schools or academies in a needlework class.
