An item such as this pistol, given to Frederick R. Bridges in 1889 when he was nine years old, is typical of the multiplicity of items made by the glass industry in the latter part of the 19th century. This hollow glass pistol was probably originally a bottle sealed with a cork, one of the novelty flasks used to sell a small quantity of whiskey or other spirit. After it was used it could be given as a toy to a young boy, as this one was.
