Two pieces of information can be gleaned from this document in the Thomas Williams Ashley papers: first, that the 23-year-old Ashley was planning to join the Marine Corps Reserve and was required to have a physical exam, and second, that the exam qualified him to become a member of the Corps. Ashley was a recent graduate of Amherst College (the previous June) and had spent the year after college at home in Deerfield helping his father on the farm. America entered the First World War in 1917, and his enlistment followed.
