Nearly two miles long and 10 rods (165') wide, Main Street in Northfield, Massachusetts, coincides with the original town plan. In early New England, towns were planned around a collection of home lots along a central street, then called a highway. Some of the maples and elms that line Main Street were planted around 1812-1815 as part of a beautification project. Main Street, Northfield has always been the commercial center of town, with businesses lining both sides for most of its life.
