Class in Color Design.
Plans are maturing for a class in design for arts and crafts workers, to be
conducted by Will Hutchins. This class will probably meet at the Arts and Crafts
rooms, and it is expected that a considerable number of workers in Greenfield,
Deerfield, Montague and Bernardston Societies will attend. Mr. Hutchins will
discuss principally color harmony, in a manner helpful to those interested in
artistic handicrafts. A good deal of the work in these crafts has been somewhat
crude as respects color and study of the subject can not help being fruitful.
The handling of colors for harmonious results has never been worked out on
a thoroughly scientific basis. Augustus Vincent Tack with the assistance of
Mr. Hutchins, is making some original investigations upon this subject, particularly
as to the relation of the spectrum to the musical scale, with a view to developing
the marked analogies between these two progressions, harmony in the two being
believed to be obtained through much the same intervals. Sufficiently definite
results have not been secured for publication, but Mr. Tack and Mr. Hutchins
believe that they are improving the harmony of their work by the study of this
analogy.
This phase of the subject is intricate and will not be treated by Mr. Hutchins
in the course above referred to, which will deal with aspects of the subject
more easily grasped and definitely settled. |

Will Hutchins, the driving force behind the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Movement in the early 20th century, pushed to improve the products of its members in every way possible. With this program, he hoped to teach some of the basics of color theory, hoping that his pupils would add to the traditional range they were using. By improving the use of color, they would transform their ordinary arts into extraordinary works and would be more satisfying and demand higher prices.
