LOG DRIVE NEARS TURNERS FALLS.

At a recent hearing in Boston the Conn. Valley Lumber Co. was given permission to run their logs down the river under the same restrictions as were imposed last year. It is understood that the logs will begin to be sluiced at Bellows Falls during the coming week and a few may arrive here in about 10 days' time. None of the booms have been placed in position here as yet but work will probably be started along this line early next week. It is reported that the drive this year is the smallest the company has brought down for many years and that the crew is handling the drive is correspondingly small.

As the lumber cut from Massachusetts and the upper Connecticut Valley began to drop, the annual log run began to fall off. The decline was perceptible from its height in 1907. Floating logs downriver was inherently wasteful, with many logs lost due to being waterlogged. By the 1930s trucks moved most of Massachusetts' much reduced timber harvest and the riverman's way of life had entirely disappeared.
