Whereas Joshua Sweet of Deerfield by Reason of sundry Misfortunes
is rendered unable to satisfy ye Demands of his Creditors - at present-
and has proposed to convey to his said Creditors all the Estate of which he
is seized - they thereupon to discharge him from their respective
Demands - and to hold said Estate in such proporation as their
Demands respectively are to the full Value of the Estate is to
be conveyed -- We whose Names are underwritten hereby
certify that we are willing to discharge him from our Demands
upon the aforementioned principles -- provided all his Creditors
enter into the same Engagement -- the Estate proposed to be
Deerfield Jany 16th 1790 conveyed as above consists of Thirty
five Acres of Land in Deerfield--twenty Acres of which is under
good Improvement with a Dwelling House thereon & supposed
to be of the Value of £160..10 in the whole --

The Court lists Joshua Sweet's debtors by name and the amount he owed to each of them. The total debt amounts to 168 pounds, 8 shillings, 3 pence. The explanation for such a large debt to a man who is only 29 is described as "by reason of sundry misfortune." We know little about Joshua Sweet except that he served in the Continental Army for 3 years beginning in 1781. He owned 35 acres of land in Wisdom, a section of Deerfield, Massachusetts, 20 of which is considered improved, with a dwelling house valued at 160 pounds, 10 shillings. The house was still standing 100 years later when George Sheldon mentions it in his "A History of Deerfield." Joshua Sweet later removed to Madison, Ohio.
