At a full Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town
of Shelburn in the County of Hampshire on ye 25th
Day of January 1787—Humbly Sheweth--
Takeing into Consideration the Alarming Circumstan
ces of our Distressed State= In a Number of Peo=
=ples Riseing to Arms which we Disapprove of Not
Being a Constitutional way of Seeking Redress of
our Grievances: Wherefore your Petitioners Humbly
Pray That your Excellency & Honours would be
Pleased in your Clemency and Wisdom to Grant
an act of General Indemnity Both in Person and
Property To all those who have Taken up arms against
Government They Laying Down their arms & become=
ing Loyal Dutiful Subjects to the State as we Depri
=cate a Civil war and the Sheding of Human Blood
& as in Duty Bound Will Ever pray

as may be and if your Sentiments agre with ours
or Something Similar to Prevent the Efusion
of Blood You will Choose a Comtee of one or more
men to meet the Comtees of the Several Towns in the
Northwest Corner of the County of Hampshire on
Tuesday ye 30th Day of this Instant January at one
O Clock in ye afternoon at the House of Mr. John
Burdick Inholder in Shelburn in order to forward
the Several Petitions that May be Sent to the
Governor and Council without Delay

The town of Shelburne, Massachusetts, drafted a petition to Governor Bowdoin asking for clemency towards the participants in Shays' Rebellion. They forwarded a copy of this petition to the selectmen of Deerfield, asking them to form a committee to meet on January 30, 1787, with the committees of the other area towns to forward clemency petitions to the Governor and Council.
