Buttoned up in their best clothes, young students pose for a school picture by Alvah and George Howe, traveling photographers from Ashfield, Massachusetts. Note how formal and similar the clothing appears in 1900. Only the female teacher, at the upper left, wears a long dress. She has one of the few respectable jobs for women in this period. Of the fourteen schools in Deerfield in 1900, twelve were one-room schoolhouses. This class, housed in the remodeled Town House, was one of the only two with separate grade levels.
