PLAINFIELD.- The census of this town shows a population of 579, a decrease of 60 since 1860. The inhabitants are divided as follows, viz.: over 90 years old, 1; between 80 and 90, 8; between 70 and 80, 43; between 60 and 70, 66; between 50 and 60, 61; between 40 and 50, 70; between 30 and 40, 62; between 20 and 30, 80; between 10 and 20, 99; under 10, 89; total 579. Paupers settled in town, 4; over 20 years, unable to read or write, only 1, and that one idiotic; blind, 1; insane, 1; born in Massachusetts, 529; Vermont, 12; New York, 12; Illinois, 3; Ohio, 2; Maine, 2; New Hampshire, 2; Connecticut, 10; North Carolina, 1; Ireland, 8; England, 1; Germany, 1; Nova Scotia, 1; total, 579. Only 1 black in town, and he a freedman brought from Newbern by Lieut. F. A. Dyer of the 2d Heavy Artillery. This is a list of statistics for the Franklin County, Massachusetts, towns taken from the census of 1865. Included are the number of houses, families and inhabitants, as well as the number of acres planted for each crop and kinds of farm animals. Also included are manufactured products and amounts of agricultural products that were sold. These statistics can be used to form a picture of what life was like in the towns. The Gazette & Courier was the newspaper in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from July 20, 1841 until June 24, 1932. Before 1841 the newspaper's name changed quite frequently, with Gazette a frequent part of the title.
