Anarchists Blamed for Dissension

NASHUA, N.H. (AP)- Sen. Barry Goldwater says "President Nixon's courageous action in Cambodia has been met with weeping and wailing from the spokesmen for the political left."

The Arizona Republican, in a speech before the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night, said that "liberals and anarchists are attempting to undermine the President's role in conducting foreign affairs.

"This mixed bag of liberals and anarchists just can't get over the fact that their theories and policies were soundly rejected by the American people in 1968 and they throw a temper tantrum every time they don't get their way," he said.

"They think they can bully the President, and the solid majority that supports his efforts to disengage with honor, by making threats to shut down our great institutions of learning, he said.

Members of Congress who support the protesters, Goldwater said, are issuing a "direct challenge to the fundamental role of the President in planning and conducting military and foreign affairs."

In a televised speech on April 30, 1970, President Nixon announced an expansion of the Vietnam War through an invasion of Cambodia. Anti-war protest spread across the United States as a result of this announcement. On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guard troops, sent onto the campus of Kent State University to control student protests, opened fire on the demonstrators. Four students were killed. Speaking before the New Hampshire Chamber of Commerce on May 7th, 1970, Senator Barry Goldwater (Arizona) reflected on the deepening polarization in the United States over the Vietnam War. He blamed a "mixed bag of liberals and anarchists" for undermining the President's foreign policy and conduct of the war. Senator Goldwater?s statement is an early association of liberalism with political dissension.
