This apple tree gave shade for a noonday rest for the workhorses and the farm workers in the field behind the Allen House in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Allen sisters, Frances and Mary, became known for their photographs of New England country life in the days before machinery ran the farm. Note the blinders on the horses to keep them on task.
