This painting by Elizabeth Fuller (1896-1979) shows the farming landscape of Deerfield with the Pocumtuck Range in the background. Onion growing in the Connecticut River Valley expanded at a great rate in the early twentieth century. Newly arrived immigrants from Eastern Europe supplied the increased demand for farm workers. Some eventually bought their own farms. Elizabeth Fuller was from Deerfield, Massachusetts. She came from a family of remarkably gifted artists. Her father, George Fuller (1822-1884), enjoyed great success in the 1870s in Boston and New York City.
