This picture of a Puritan minister leading his flock gives us an idea of the size of the Old Deerfield pageants. Casts numbered into the hundreds at each performance wearing donated, homemade or rented costumes. In the distant background the tops of cars can be seen, at a time when they were just becoming widely owned. Car spaces could be reserved in advance for $5.00 for 5 passengers; each extra passenger cost 50 cents per person. Other people traveled to Deerfield to see the recreation of history by electric trolleys, railroad, and horse and carriage.
