1916 marked the 300th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death and many of the pageants staged that year included references to his plays. In spite of the summer heat and frequent showers pageant participants in Deerfield, Massachusetts, posed in silk and velvet, for photographers Frances and Mary Allen. The allegorical figure of Vision, in a yellow mosquito netting dress, exuded grace and drama. Local resident Mr. Hyde, as Shakespeare, was described by the Allen Sisters as "a very clever imitation and likes the fun."
