1916 marked the 300th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death and many of the pageants staged that year included references to his plays. In spite of the summer heat and rain, pageant participants in Deerfield, Massachusetts posed in silk and velvet, for photographers Frances and Mary Allen. A local resident, Mr. Hyde, played Shakespeare and was described by the Allen sisters as "a very clever imitation and likes the fun."
