At the turn of the 20th century, many towns and villages in America found they needed to make their schools bigger as large numbers of new immigrants arrived from Europe. In 1913, South Deerfield built its largest school ever. It had 2 floors and a full basement of classrooms. This 1913 school was state-of-the-art, with fancy ventilation systems and indoor plumbing. Both were thought to be important for the health of the students. It became a law for children ages 8 to 15 to go to school in 1858.
